With the XXI Olympic Winter Games upon us in less than a month, it is a time to celebrate the dedication of all athletes who train day in and day out for one shot at the coveted Olympic medal. Some have been training since they were 5 years old. Others maybe only a few years. Whatever the case may be, they have dedicated their lives to excelling in their particular sport to the point where they now have the opportunity to be crowned the best in the world in front of millions of viewers around the globe. Their sacrifices to get here will never truly be known to anyone who has not taken the journey with them, and you will never know how many times that athlete almost gave up on their dream before

Google ‘Oprah’ and you will come up with over 23 million hits in 0.09 seconds. She is a woman of immense wealth and influence, but she is also one of the world’s greatest philanthropists. Many also consider her to be a notable spiritual leader. From her tumultuous upbringing to now, Oprah has overcome many obstacles to become the success she is today. She is a true inspiration for following one’s dream, and not letting anyone stand in the way.

Oprah was born on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to a teenage mother. It is said that she had so little during her childhood that she had to wear a potato sack as a dress. However, she was a good student growing up and became an honours student in high school. Her dedication to her education and participation in clubs later earned her a full scholarship to Tennessee State University.

Hope: To look forward with confidence and expectation
There have been many inspirational leaders from our past who have spoken of hope. Most recently, Barack Obama’s 2008 Presidential Campaign, which was based on the premise of reclaiming America’s hope for the future and for a better world. “Yes We Can” was based on the thought that together, we can all make a difference and create positive change. Another leader of hope was Nelson Mandela. This is a man who dreamed of transforming South Africa into a democratic and free society. One where there would be harmony and equal opportunity for all. Albert Einstein also spoke of hope in one of his more popular quotes, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” All of these men looked forward with confidence and expectation of creating a better world for us to live in.
