Philanthropy: 5 Ways You Can Make A Difference Today

“If you wish to experience peace, provide peace for another.” ~ Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” ~ Mother Teresa

The definition of philanthropy is “the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.” In fact, the origin of the word actually means “loving mankind” (from phil- “loving” + anthropos “mankind”). In today’s society, we hear a lot about corporate philanthropy or celebrity philanthropy (Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt),which makes many of us think that philanthropy is only for those who have a lot of money to give. Many of us don’t realize that there are little things that we can all do everyday to make a difference in our local or global community.

Recently, I picked up the book ‘How To Be An Everyday Philanthropist’ by Nicole Bouchard Boles, which focuses on ideas for how people can contribute to their community and world no matter what their income. The following five ideas, along with many others, are touched on in Ms. Bouchard Boles book.

Give your time by serving lunches or dinners to the homeless or less

Two Monks Come to a River.....A Lesson in Letting Go

Sometimes we hang on to events from our past that cause us worry or burden us with what could have / should have happened. In this story, two monks teach us a lesson in letting those burdens go (author is unknown). Let me know what you think.

Two Buddhist Monks were on a journey, one was a senior monk, the other a junior monk. During their journey they approached a raging river and on the river bank stood a young lady. She was clearly concerned about how she would get to the other side of the river without drowning.

The junior monk walked straight past her without giving it a thought and he crossed the river. The senior monk picked up the woman and carried her across the river. He placed her down, they parted ways with woman and on they went with the journey.

In the evening the younger monk came to the elder monk and said, “Sir, as monks, we cannot touch a woman?”

The elder monk answered “yes, brother”.

Then the younger monk asks again, “but then Sir, why is it you lifted that woman by the river?”

The elder monk smiled at him and told him “I left the woman

Will Smith: Representing What Is Possible

Thanks to a very loyal fan of this blog, I was recently given the link to a great Will Smith video montage on YouTube. The name of it is Will’s Wisdom (check it out here), and I found this video to have many great thoughts on life. Viewing this video actually lead me to explore YouTube a little more to find other videos of Will sharing his wisdom and insight. The video provided below is just one of his many available interviews, but I wanted to share this one with you because of the following 5 ideas. Take a look at the list, then watch the video. What’s one key point that Will makes that stands out for you?

Represent the possibilities. Will doesn’t want to be an icon, he wants to be an idea. He wants to leave an impact on people by representing what is possible. In your life, how do you represent to others what is possible?
Make a choice, don’t leave your life to be an effect of someone else’s decision. We are who we choose to be.
Create for yourself what you want. Make a decision to create something, then study and learn it until you
