Supporting Peace & Promoting the Shared Interest of Humanity: Who are The Elders?

The story of the Elders started in a conversation between the entrepreneur Richard Branson and the musician Peter Gabriel. The idea they discussed was a simple one. In an increasingly interdependent world – a global village – could a small, dedicated group of independent elders help to resolve global problems and ease human suffering?

For inspiration, they looked to traditional societies, where elders often help to share wisdom and resolve disputes within communities. They took their idea to Nelson Mandela, who agreed to support it. With the help of Graça Machel and Desmond Tutu, Mandela set about bringing the Elders together.

The Elders are an independent group of eminent global leaders, who offer their collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity.

If You Think You’re Beaten
by Kristone

If you think you’re beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,
It’s almost for sure, you won’t.

If you think you’re losing, you’ve lost.
For out in the world we find -
Success begins with a person’s will,
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are,
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You have to stay with it,
In order to win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go,
To the one with the better plan.
For more often than not, you will win,
If only you think you can.

Thought for the weekend: Your thoughts will take you as far as you need to go, so what are you thinking?

I call this coincidence because days before I had started working on this blog post on Susan Boyle. Who is Susan Boyle, you say? Susan Boyle is the middle-aged woman who appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2008, and despite being mocked and judged by her physical appearance, went on to perform one of the most captivating television performances of all time. The song she sang – “I Dreamed A Dream”. Now, I’m not one to watch a show like Britain’s Got Talent. Seeing as I live in Canada I’m not even sure I would have been given the opportunity. However, the buzz on this performance has refused to go away and a few months ago I broke down and looked up Susan Boyle on YouTube. Seven minutes later I knew I had to share this inspiring story, and share the inspiring video of her performance.

“I know what they were thinking, but why should it matter as long as I can sing? It’s not a beauty contest.” ~ Susan Boyle
