I recently finished reading ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert. I know there are numerous reviews out there on this book (the book only remained on the New York Times Best Seller list for 158 weeks), but I thought I would share with you my thoughts on it. Most simply, I would have to say it was one of the best books I have read. Elizabeth Gilbert, in this creation of genius, was so easy to read and relate to that I was able to finish this book in just a couple weeks (I’m a slow reader, and don’t get oodles of time to read, so that’s a good pace). It was funny, encouraging, and inspiring. I’m not sure how the male readers feel (so please weigh in if you are reading), but as a woman I loved how it showed the journey of one woman who was able to discover who she was by realizing who she didn’t want to be.
It’s a story of love, in learning to love another, but most importantly in learning to love yourself. It’s a story of new beginnings, in fighting through despair and finding happiness on the other side. It’s a story of finding your spirit, in being able to be still and find your god, while allowing others to find theirs without judgment. It is a magnificent story, and I recommend you read it.

In order to emphasize how good this book really is I want to share with you 12 quotes from the book itself. I hope they resonate with you as much as they did with me.

“I’m here. I love you. I don’t care if you need to stay up crying all night long, I will stay with you. There’s nothing you can ever do to lose my love. I will protect you until you die, and after your death I will still protect you. I am stronger than Depression and I am braver than Loneliness and nothing will ever exhaust me.”

“When I get lonely these days, I think: So BE lonely, Liz. Learn your way around loneliness. Make a map of it. Sit with it, for once in your life. Welcome to the human experience. But never again use another person’s body or emotions as a scratching post for your own unfulfilled yearnings.”

“In desperate love, we always invent the characters of our partners, demanding they be what we need of them, and then feeling devastated when they refuse to perform the role we created in the first place.”

“We search for happiness everywhere, but we are like Tolstoy’s fabled beggar who spent his life sitting on a pot of gold, under him the whole time. Your treasure–your perfection–is within you already. But to claim it, you must leave the commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego and enter into the silence of the heart.”

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”

“Tis’ better to live your own life imperfectly than to imitate someone else’s perfectly.”

“There is so much about my fate that I cannot control, but other things do fall under the jurisdiction. I can decide how I spend my time, whom I interact with, whom I share my body and life and money and energy with. I can select what I can read and eat and study. I can choose how I’m going to regard unfortunate circumstances in my life-whether I will see them as curses or opportunities. I can choose my words and the tone of voice in which I speak to others. And most of all, I can choose my thoughts.”

“In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.”

“You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight.”

“I am a better person when I have less on my plate.”

“Some days are meant to be counted, others are meant to be weighed.”

“I have good idea, for if you meet some person from different religion and he want to make argument about God. My idea is, you listen to everything this man say about God. Never argue about God with him. Best thing to say is, ‘I agree with you.’ Then you go home, pray what you want. This is my idea for people to have peace about religion.”

In case you can’t get enough and you want more inspiration from “Liz” Gilbert herself, check out her TED Talk on nurturing creativity. This is a great talk on distancing ourselves from our creative anguish, and to have the courage to show up every day to do what you can, even if your creative genius isn’t always there. Her story is intriguing and inspiring, which is why I share it with you today.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist. What is that you ask? Since I had to look it up myself, here is the definition – in short, neuroanatomy is a branch of neuroscience which deals with the study of the structure of the brain and the nervous system. In 1996, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor became a neuroanatomist with first-hand knowledge of how the brain really works when one morning she woke up to discover that she was experiencing a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain. Now, I would imagine most people, if they were to experience something like this, would freak out a little bit and call for help. However, being a brain expert allowed Dr. Taylor to observe what was happening within her body from an objective point of view, and because of this has been able to go on to share her fascinating story through interviews and her book “My Stroke of Insight“.

Two and a half weeks after the incident, Dr. Taylor underwent major brain surgery to remove a golf ball size blood clot that was placing pressure on the language centers in the left hemisphere of her brain. It took eight years for Dr. Taylor to successfully rebuild her brain. Since that time she has gone on to become a successful author, speaker, and overall brain and life activist.

I share with you now Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s presentation from TED2008. May it be the beginning, or perhaps the continuation, of your relationship with this fascinating and inspiring woman.
Wow. Who knew so many great thinkers and speakers were born in June? As per the usual, I have compiled a list of great quotes from great people born in the month of June. Vince Lombardi, Richard Bach, the Dalai Lama, Anne Frank, Helen Keller…..I could go on and on. It’s an amazing list, and I’m happy to share it with you today. Take a read through these timeless classics and let me know which one is your favourite.

When I was younger I used to write poems for my mom on Mother’s Day. They weren’t elaborate Walt Whitman-type poems at all, but it was my little way of showing that I cared. Unfortunately, this little tradition has fallen by the wayside as I’ve gotten older. I blame it on the uncreative mind of adulthood. In place of the poem, though, I still try to add a little extra to my Mother’s Day card by adding a quote or two from some of the great minds of the past or present. Below I share 10 amazing quotes that pay tribute to all of those amazing mom’s out there. Happy Mother’s Day!

“My mom is a neverending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune.” ~Graycie Harmon

You may or may not have noticed, but it’s been a while since I last posted to my blog. I could make many excuses for this, but instead I will recommend a blog that can help us all simplify our lives to really focus on what is important. Too often we get caught up in being “busy” and lose track of what is important – mainly relationships, exercise, and beloved hobbies. Sometimes this can’t be helped. There are just times of the year when the stars align to run you off your feet. However, when you get a moment to step back and take stock of where your energies are being spent, sometimes there are choices we have to make to let some of that busy work go. We especially need to let these tasks or errands go if they don’t align with our goals or values.

One of my favourite blogs to help remind me to live more simply is Zen Habits: Simple Productivity by Leo Babauta. “Zen Habits is about finding simplicity in the daily chaos of our lives.
One of my favourite blogs to help remind me to live more simply is Zen Habits: Simple Productivity by Leo Babauta. “Zen Habits is about finding simplicity in the daily chaos of our lives. It’s about clearing the clutter so we can focus on what’s important, create something amazing, find happiness.” For me, he speaks of a more simple life that I hope to some day live. One spent taking walks with my family, reading that new book that I’m excited about, and reducing the amount of clutter in my home. Each new day is a new opportunity to live more simply. Zen Habits provides 3 posts a week to help guide us in how to get there.

The best place to start on Zen Habits is the beginning – The Beginner’s Guide to Zen Habits – A Guided Tour. Here you will be able to see Mr. Babauta’s most popular posts, his category breakdown, his recommended reading, and a list of his own book offerings. It doesn’t get much more simple than that.

Please check out Zen Habits and let me know what you think. What article from Zen Habits speaks to you the most? Let me know, as I have just scratched the surface of this wonderful site myself.

I hope you all are well, and hopefully not too busy to enjoy the simple treasures of life. Take care and thank you for visiting.

It is with great excitement that I announce today the launch of my new website – www.run4play.com.

Run 4 Play is a fundraising website to help raise awareness and funds for Right To Play Canada. Over the next 6 months I will be participating in 6-10 trail running and road running events. Combine this with many hours of training and I will be running over 100 kilometers between now and October 1st, 2010. Along the way it will be my own personal mission to raise awareness for all the great work Right To Play does around the world, as well as keep an active journal of all my running adventures.

The site will include an easy link to my official Right To Play fundraising page, where people will be able to make safe and secure donations. It will also show a fundraiser tracker to show my progress towards my goal of raising at least $5,000 over the next six months. Breaking that down, that is only 250 donations of just $20. I have included a countdown from 250 so that we can all see how even small contributions can add up to big success. I will also be
Continue reading LTI Recommends: www.Run4Play.com

I haven’t actually visited the MoneySense website in a while, but in preparing for this blog post I took another journey back. What I found was very exciting. They have given their website a facelift and now offer many different ways to connect with them (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, RSS Feeds). Maybe it’s just me, but I really get excited about that because now I can have articles sent straight to my Google Reader, which I can then peruse every morning to see what catches my interest.

All this and I haven’t even mentioned the personal financial planning content! Since that is the most important part, the following is a list of the 7 key reasons you need to read MoneySense Magazine:

1. Canadian Content – A lot of the time we are subjected to American content when it comes to financial news or personal financial planning. MoneySense offers all the news and information we need from a Canadian perspective.

2. Online Content / Blog / Newsletter/ Forums – With so many options to connect, gaining access to this wealth of information is just a click away.

3. Easy to Read – I love MoneySense for the fact that it uses plain english to explain financial matters for every level. This is the magazine I first started reading to learn more about investing and financial planning. Now I am a DRIP and ETF investor and take courses to learn more whenever I can. Talk about getting a head start.

4. Topics include Planning / Investing / Real Estate / More – Another reason why Canadian content is important.

5. Great Lists - Who doesn’t want to know what the best paying lottery in Canada is, the world’s top stocks, or the top countries to invest in?

6. Get Your Subscription with Airmiles – Can it get any easier than this? Do you have a few Airmiles to spare? Head on over to www.airmiles.ca and get your subscription to MoneySense magazine.

7. Couch Potato Investing – Learn how to manage your own portfolio of stocks in less than 15 minutes a year. It’s been a rocky couple of years, but the couch potato approach will give you a nice balanced portfolio that you can individually gear towards your own risk tolerance.

Hopefully I have convinced you to at least take a look at this site and think about learning more about your own personal finances.
