When I was younger I used to write poems for my mom on Mother’s Day. They weren’t elaborate Walt Whitman-type poems at all, but it was my little way of showing that I cared. Unfortunately, this little tradition has fallen by the wayside as I’ve gotten older. I blame it on the uncreative mind of adulthood. In place of the poem, though, I still try to add a little extra to my Mother’s Day card by adding a quote or two from some of the great minds of the past or present. I don’t know about you, but I love reading quotes. I don’t even really have to know the person who is saying it, just so long as the quote hits me with a new or challenging thought for areas of my life that are important to me or that I would like to improve. In ‘Unlimited Power’ by Anthony Robbins, he speaks to the reader about modeling those people who have the characteristics that you would like to adapt for yourself. In my mind, reading quotes gives me the ability to connect with leaders of years past or present, and allows me to adopt a mindset that I know will lead to better thoughts and actions for my life.
