“Welcome to Canada - Make Us Better.”

The quote in the title of this post is from a story that John Furlong, Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games has told many times over. As the story goes (source: http://www.vancouver2010.com), when John Furlong arrived in Canada more than thirty years ago from Ireland, a customs officer offered a warm but specific greeting: “Welcome to Canada – make us better.”

Dedication, Perseverance, Courage. The Olympic Games offer us a unique opportunity to celebrate the characteristics that allow an athlete to rise above the competition, and through this they offer inspiration to every person who follows them. Although commercialism has crept into every facet of our culture, these games, at their core, are not about money or fame. They are about sacrifice and pride. They are about striving to be the best that you can be, and wanting to inspire others to do their best. Raising the flag of each country on the podium isn’t just about “see what I did”, but more “see what you can do.” We can all be better – in sport, in our actions, in life. We can all strive

“And Now For The Good News…” Ode Magazine

LTI Recommends: www.odemagazine.com

The first time I came across this magazine it’s cover had a close-up of a beautiful face broken out in laughter. As it turned out, the whole magazine was about laughter. Why it is good for us, how it affects our bodies, how we can do more of it. Did you know there’s even something called laughter yoga? I didn’t before I found Ode Magazine. That is the great thing about Ode Magazine. They tell you the good news, they highlight the positive trends, they expose the movements going on in the world that will bring positive change. As their tag line suggests, the magazine is geared towards the “intelligent optimist” who is looking for a little good news among all the bad, and what’s more is that Ode Magazine delivers on it’s promise. Below I break down how:

The Reason to Believe in Others

“Treat a man as he is, he will remain so. Treat a man the way he can be and ought to be, and he will become as he can be and should be.” ~ Goethe

What happens when you believe in someone more than they believe in themselves?

With the XXI Olympic Winter Games upon us in less than a month, it is a time to celebrate the dedication of all athletes who train day in and day out for one shot at the coveted Olympic medal. Some have been training since they were 5 years old. Others maybe only a few years. Whatever the case may be, they have dedicated their lives to excelling in their particular sport to the point where they now have the opportunity to be crowned the best in the world in front of millions of viewers around the globe. Their sacrifices to get here will never truly be known to anyone who has not taken the journey with them, and you will never know how many times that athlete almost gave up on their dream before
