What does transparency and celebrity have to do with charity? Have you heard about the $600 billion challenge? Which Canadian Charity is rated the highest among its peers? Read on to find out.

Once upon a time I read a book called “Philanthrocapitalism” by Matthew Bishop and Michael Green. This book opened my eyes to the world of philanthropy and the wealthy people who have taken it upon themselves to make their mark through charity and social assistance on a global scale. “Philanthrocapitalism” includes interviews with such social-conscious celebrities as Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, George Soros, Richard Branson, Angelina Jolie, and Bono. In the past, we have all looked to our governments to tackle and solve social issues, but a new movement is beginning where the more fortunate citizens of this world are using their money to tackle issues such as poverty, climate change, and treatable disease. In June of this year, Fortune Magazine ran a story that is yet another example of celebrities flexing their philanthropic muscles. Philanthropy: 5 Ways You Can Make A Difference Today

The definition of philanthropy is “the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.” In fact, the origin of the word actually means “loving mankind” (from phil- “loving” + anthropos “mankind”). In today’s society, we hear a lot about corporate philanthropy or celebrity philanthropy (Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt),which makes many of us think that philanthropy is only for those who have a lot of money to give. Many of us don’t realize that there are little things that we can all do everyday to make a difference in our local or global community.

Recently, I picked up the book ‘How To Be An Everyday Philanthropist’ by Nicole Bouchard Boles, which focuses on ideas for how people can contribute to their community and world no matter what their income. The following five ideas, along with many others, are touched on in Ms. Bouchard Boles book.

Many also consider her to be a notable spiritual leader. From her tumultuous upbringing to now, Oprah has overcome many obstacles to become the success she is today. Oprah was born on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to a teenage mother. It is said that she had so little during her childhood that she had to wear a potato sack as a dress.
